Why Did FX Cancelled Its Sci-Fi Drama, ‘Y: The Last Man’?

FX announced the first sci-fi drama in 2015, Y: The Last Man. It was still in development. The 10-episode series will end in November. The show’s post-apocalyptic theme is inspired by the DC Comics award-winning series written and directed by Pia Guerra and Brian K. Vaughan. The catastrophic event destroys every mammal that has a Y-chromosome. The only exception is Yorick Brown, a transgender man played by Ben Schnetzer and his pet monkey.

The series follows the lives of survivors following the catastrophic incident that rocked the world. Many setbacks have been experienced over the years. Production delays, creative changes, and a COVID-19 pandemic all prompted production to resume. Y: The Last ManIn late 2020.

Why was “Y: The Last Man” canceled after just one season?

The showrunner Y: The Last ManEliza Clark announced that FX on Hulu’s FX series had been canceled on October 17. Eliza Clark took to social media to inform fans that the series had been canceled before Season 1 ended. Eliza thanked both the network and its creative team for their support in the venture. Eliza also stated that she hopes the show can continue on another network.

Eliza tweeted, “We have learned that we will not be moving forward with FX on Hulu Season 2 of Y: The Last Man. I have never in my life been more committed to a story, and there is so much more left to tell. Y: The Last Man is about gender, about how oppressive systems inform identity. We had a gender-diverse team of brilliant artists, led by women at almost every corner of our production. Producers, writers, directors, cinematographers, production design, costume design, stunt coordination, and more.”

She added, “It is the most collaborative, creative, fulfilling, and beautiful thing I have ever been a part of. We don’t want it to end. FX has been an amazing partner. We have loved working with them, and we’re sad YTLM is not going forward at FX on Hulu. But we know that someone else will be fortunate to have this team and this story. I have never experienced the remarkable solidarity of this many talented people. We are committed to finding Y it’s next home.”

Eliza previously stated that she could see the series running for five to six more seasons. However, that may have changed after the abrupt cancellation. Hulu and FX did not make statements about why. Y: The Last ManThe show was canceled so soon that it is unclear why. It had received positive reviews upon its debut last month. The series is likely to be saved by another network and renewed for Season 2.
